Energy is used to warm our homes, cook our food, give us images on television, play music, and much more; therefore, making it one of the most important aspects of our daily lives. An energy crisis occurs when the nation experiences a disruption in energy supplies – in our case, oil. The disruption will also be accompanied by an increase in energy prices that threaten national security and economic health. With oil as our country’s base energy form; it will be referred to as an oil crisis, a petroleum crisis, an energy shortage, an electricity shortage or an electricity crisis.
Electricity is the second most commonly utilized energy form for heating houses after all. The situation is more desperate when electricity acts as the only source of heating throughout the nation. There are various reasons to believe that, dissimilar to the electricity and gas crises of the 70s, 80s and 90s, energy troubles people face today will last for decades to come.
Natural gas, oil and coal are all types of fuel known as non-renewable. In fact, those who have control of water and oil will control the world as oil is the globe’s primary transportation fuel.
Statistics indicate that coal provides approximately half of the nation’s electricity supply, and the United States has enough coal to provide energy for more than two centuries. While coal is a cheap alternative, the apparatus required to turn coal into electricity is not cost-effective. Higher electricity prices force the utility companies to invest in conventional coal plants despite governments wanting to restrict the heat-trapping carbon dioxide emissions.
The average population spends approximately $100 billion per year on electricity, and the average home uses 25% of the energy to power electronics even while the items are turned off. Energy efficient technology is beneficial as it saves both money and electricity; however, this will not be available until the country’s electricity demand is satisfied. At the moment the demand continues to grow at a rate of two percent per year.
Landscaping the area for energy efficiency can dramatically reduce cooling and heating expenses, which is typically the largest component of a house’s energy usage. While dependence on energy is not likely to decrease, there continues to be an increase in the different technologies used for energy conservation and usage.
